Hand painted acrylic on recycled cigar box sealed with satin varnish

Belted Kingfishers living in Tennessee mate from March to July. Males may court females by feeding her fish. They are also known to court their mates by circling in high flight and making rattling calls. They dig their nests together near water banks using their bills and feet. The males do most of the burrowing. These burrows can be up to 8ft long, where they lay 5-8 glossy, white eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs for 23 to 24 days with the females incubating the eggs at night and the males taking over in the morning. Both parents feed their young parts of digested fish progressing to whole fish as the hatchling matures.
